Purpose of Dating

Make New Friends

Especially in high school and college, dating is about forming new relationships with potential partners. When done correctly, without petty and childish behavior, dating is a way to make new friends. You meet people who have similar interests to yours and you go out and find out that you have a great time together. Sometimes there is a great romantic connection; sometimes there is not. In those cases where the romance just is not there, you can become friends. And, there is always room in your life for one more friend.

Find Out Your Likes and Dislikes

Dting is about finding out more about what you want in a potential mate. Maybe you are drawn to that preppy boy who enjoys playing golf. You go out with him and then realize, rather quickly, that you cannot handle someone who only talks about golf. He's still a great guy, but not for you. This helps you to realize that you do not want a jock. As you get older and dating becomes more serious, you will learn what long-term traits are important to you. Until you date someone with these traits, you really do not know if his personality will match yours. Dating is all about trial and error. Very rarely do people end up marrying the first person they go out with in high school. Learn from each dating connection you make and you will be even more educated about making the right choice.

Learn From Your Mistakes

You are also going to make mistakes. You may "accidentally" lie to your dating partner. You may think about cheating. You might even cheat. You may fall for your partner's best friend. Throughout your dating years, you will make many different mistakes. Some will be bad and some will just be unfortunate blunders. Learn from them. Once you place yourself in your partner's shoes, you can see how your actions affect someone else. That is the time when you start to mature and really work towards become a better mate in the long run.

Find Out Who You Are

As you go through the dating process, you start to learn about the choices that you make. Once you learn why you are attracted to certain people and why you made the mistakes that you made, you will find out more and more about yourself.

Finding "The One"

All of these things added together will help you in the biggest quest of all--finding "The One." While it is true that dating is about making friends and finding out more about yourself, the biggest and most important purpose of dating is finding that lifetime mate. Some people find "The One" with the first person they ever go out with. Others takes years, if not decades, to find their "other half." It's a process. Never let the overall goal ruin the path that you take to get there. Relax and enjoy the ride.
